Our Flagship Garden — The incredible one-acre edible garden at 24th Street is GSF’s original site, where we put down our roots as an organization in 2005. Harnessing the rich diversity of its students, 24th Street works to instill a sense of social justice in the student body, and a deep respect for lines of difference. The school empowers students with the critical thinking and social-emotional skills needed for today’s world. This ethos, and the ongoing commitment of school leadership, teachers, and parents, has fueled our successful partnership with 24th Street for two decades. As one of the largest such gardens in LAUSD, 24th Street continues to thrive as a treasured resource, deeply embedded in the lives of students’ families, neighbors, and like-minded urban gardeners from across the city. Together with a Circle Garden for reading and a Native Oak Woodland habitat, the 24th Street gardens include fruit and shade trees, 35 raised beds, native plantings, production crop rows, and a major compost operation. In 2025, 24th Street was awarded a California Green Ribbon Schools Award, making them the only LAUSD school to receive this honor for the second year in a row. This award signifies an unwavering commitment to reducing environmental impact, providing environmental education, and promoting health and wellness of school staff and students. As the heart and soul of GSF, 24th Street is where we continue to pilot our most ambitious programs and experiments! GSF programs operating at 24th Street include Seed to Table, Cafeteria to Compost, and On-Campus Farmers Markets. Site Lead: Perren Carrillo

“Garden class is an amazing asset to our curriculum. Children learn so much from the garden and the way compost works. We learn about growth, trying new foods, following directions, and being able to see how important food is for our bodies.” -2ND GRADE TEACHER OF 10+ YEARS AT 24TH STREET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

“If I was planting a seed, and it was a strawberry and I love strawberries, and I was planting it and I wouldn’t be like “this is too much work” I would persevere and plant it and water it and let the sun take care of it.”

Building on a solid tradition of student-centered problem-solving strategies, Gardner Street Elementary School puts students at the heart of learning. Teachers pose questions to tap into their students’ thinking to understand how students are solving problems. In-classroom lessons are supplemented by hands-on experiences. In a fast-paced world where things are delivered and often pre-made, children are losing the connection and understanding that all we eat and use comes from the earth. Through GSF’s Cafeteria to Compost Program, Gardner Street Elementary students observe the connections between the food we eat and our environment. GSF began partnering with the school in Fall 2023 and now serves Gardner with our Cafeteria to Compost program.

After cooking students discuss food selections, tastes, previous experiences, and future desires to teach recipes. They’re also more aware of plants, living things, and ways to protect or care for organisms. I have used recipes at home and look forward to new lessons.
