24th Street Elementary - Our Flagship Garden!
2055 W 24th St, Los Angeles, CA 90018
Jefferson Park / West Adams
The incredible 1.5-acre edible garden at 24th Street is GSF’s original site, where we put down our roots as an organization in 2005. Nearly 50% of the 628 students at 24th Street are English language learners, and the school harnesses this rich diversity to full advantage. By respecting difference and instilling a sense of social justice, the school empowers its students with the critical thinking skills necessary for today’s world. This ethos, and the commitment of school leadership, teachers, and parents, has fueled our successful partnership with 24th Street for over a decade, making the garden a consistent and vital resource for both learning and community health more broadly. Together with an additional Circle Garden for reading and a Native Oak Woodland habitat, the 24th Street gardens include over 60 fruit trees, 35 productive vegetable beds, shade trees, native plantings, and a compost operation. GSF also partners with the young adults at the adjacent Widney Career Preparatory and Transition Center for a nascent propagation program in their greenhouse. Monthly Community Garden Days at 24th Street bring together school families, interns, and volunteers from the surrounding community and throughout L.A. to maintain the gardens, enjoy demos and workshops, and share meals.
